NBHS TO HOST 1st ANNUAL PERCUSSION AND COLORGUARD COMPETITION

On Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 12:00 noon New Bedford High School will host its 1st Annual Percussion and Colorguard Competition. The competition will take place in the Main Gymnasium of New Bedford High School and will include twenty-five member groups of the New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) which hail from throughout New England as well as New Bedford’s own NBHS Percussion Ensemble, NBHS Winter Guard, and the NBPS All-City Middle School Color Guard.

The students of these ensembles are all members of the Whaler Marching Band.  Band Director Eric Drew states, “While the fall marching band shows are about bringing together all elements of band and making one unified performance, during the winter months, each of these groups gets to focus within their own specialty area.”

NBHS Winter Guard Co-Captain Jen Perry describes the event as, “A lot of color and action.  There will be a great amount of dancing and different kinds of music.  It’s really exciting.”

Co-Captain Lexi Theodore adds, “All the performers in these groups work really hard to prepare these shows. It’s really great to share all that hard work with people in the audience.”

The NBHS Colorguard Routine is titled "Into the Woods" and features music from Danny Elfman's soundtrack to Alice in Wonderland.  Color Guard staff includes Addison Kataerle, Anthony Cabral, and Courtney Costello.

The Percussion Ensemble Show is titled "Aruban Jam" and features upbeat musical selections with a touch of Caribbean flair.  It tells the story of a neighborhood street fair where the bright colors and tropical atmosphere are a festive backdrop for the musical repertoire that includes original music by Chris Brooms and Kennan Wylie.  Percussion staff include Mark Souza, Tammy Martins, Charlie Silva, Sarah Cadieux, and Lauren Richards.

Mr. Drew comments about the experience, “Along the way the students are going to work really hard and have a lot of fun.  It's a great opportunity that NBHS offers its students."

Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and proceeds from the event will benefit the New Bedford High School Band and Color Guard programs.

For more information about this event or the NBHS Band program please contact Eric Drew at 508-997-4511 ex 2369 or Kerri Quinlan-Zhou Director of Fine Arts at 508-997-4511 ex 3352.
