Purpose and Description:

It is the purpose of this class to educate and prepare students who show an interest in the pursuit of a major or minor degree in music. The course will meet every day throughout the school year and counts as a full credit class. This class can also be used to satisfy students' fine arts graduation requirement. Students enrolled in this course are highly encouraged to take the AP Music Theory Exam in May. College credit may be earned based on the scores achieved on that exam.

Our textbook, The Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis, outlines the key and core principles of music theory including notation, harmony, scales, keys, intervals, transposition, texture, voice leading, cadences, non-harmonic pitches, and form. Sight singing, ear training and keyboarding will be taught on a weekly basis through a wide variety of sources, but will be centered around The Musician's Guide to Aural Skills. Other training will come with our keyboard lab and other technologies.
