Congratulations Drum Majors!

posted May 23, 2016, 3:20 AM by Eric Drew

Dear Whalers,

We had a really strong pool of candidates at Friday night's Drum Major auditions, and I really want to congratulate everyone who auditioned.  The improvement of the band has been really evident over the few months with strong performances, and now some very strong candidates to become drum major next fall.  Every one of you who auditioned should hold your head high and be proud.  You are what makes this Whaler Marching Band great.

I want to be sure to thank everyone who auditioned and all of the judges who participated in the auditions on Friday night.  It was a challenging event for everyone, but a lot of learning occurred and I look forward to all of the learning about conducting and leadership that will come in the next weeks and months.

Unfortunately, we also can't have six drum majors in a band our size, so decisions had to be made.  I am proud to say that we have an excellent drum major team to lead the band on the field this fall, and that those drum majors will be Chelsea Spitz and Mikaeyla Costa.  Congratulations to you both! I look forward to seeing the energy and service that you can bring to our Whaler Marching Band this fall.

Yours in music,
Mr. Eric Drew

Drum Major Auditions

Drum Major Auditions for the 2016 Fall Marching Season will take place on Friday, May 20 at 4:00pm in the NBHS Band Room.  Candidates must have completed one season of Marching Band and be in good academic standing in order to apply. Applications must be completed and turned in upon arrival for the auditions.  Anyone accepting the position must make a commitment to attend every rehearsal and performance for the 2015-2016 school year and must place band as a priority over other school activities.

Audition format will be as follows:

    I. Conduct the National Anthem

    II. Informal Interview

    III. Marching Exhibition

    IV. Prepared Conducting

The Auditions will be performed for a committee of 3-6 people chosen by Mr. Drew with various backgrounds qualifying them to take part.  The committee will select 1-3 drum major(s) as deemed appropriate with the goal being to select the strongest team of drum majors to lead the band musically and personally.  Results will be announced upon conclusion of the auditions.

The Auditions should last about three to four hours.  If there are more than five candidates, the pool will be narrowed to five students after round one (Conducting the National Anthem).

Help sessions will be held for all interested students on the following dates from 3:00-4:00pm in the NBHS Band Room:

        Monday, May 9

        Thursday, May 12
